If your 2020 goal is to quit smoking, eat healthily, or save more and spend less money, the industry is going to tempt you. But don’t let that scare you. Below are some tips to help you overcome the challenges and succeed.

QUIT SMOKING

Quitting cigarettes or other nicotine products is the best resolution you can make. It’s also one of the hardest. Don’t let that stop you.

Accept that nicotine dependence is a mental and physical need for nicotine. Your neurochemistry has changed. The nicotine is in control.

But know that many people have quit!

And you can quit too!

Restaurants are one of the most nicotine-dependent industries. Overcoming the habit while at work is sometimes the hardest part.

Do you smoke at work as a social habit or to deal with stress? Is smoking the only time you take a break?

Identify your reasons for smoking at work and make a strategy to avoid the trap.

Quitting cold turkey is one of the most effective methods to quit.  But other methods use nicotine replacement and prescription medicine.

Download a smoking cessation app such as Kwit, or QuitNow to track your progress. Watch as your body heals and your wallet grows.

Be prepared with a healthy snack and a pack of gum. Find coworkers who support you.

Many have quit; many have tried; many will be inspired.

No matter what, don’t give up. Few people succeed on their first try. So, if you resolve to quit, quit this year no matter how many tries it takes.

EAT HEALTHY

A week into a healthy diet and the chef starts pulling pizzas out of the brick oven.

Let’s face it—it’s hard to eat healthy when you work in a restaurant. You’re around amazing food every day. But with a little planning, you can succeed.

First, recognize that you need to eat. After 15,000 steps, you will get hungry! Pack yourself a healthy lunch and ask the chef for a place to keep it.

Find a friend who also wants to eat healthy—trade food, challenge, and support each other.

Keep food for emergencies on hand. Protein bars, trail mix, or other healthy to will give you energy and keep you full.

Don’t just avoid fast foods, processed foods, and sugars. Transform your eating habits by finding balanced foods that you enjoy.

And don’t forget to live a little. If you are packing a lunch, you don’t need a family meal but treat yourself occasionally. 

SAVE MORE. SPEND LESS!

If you want to save more and spend less in 2020, you need a good budget and self-discipline.

First—a good budget.

Percentages

Make a rough estimate of your expenses and break your income into percentages. It’s tough when your tips and schedules vary, but a rough estimate can help keep you on track.

One popular breakdown is 50/20/30—50% for your needs, 20% for savings and debt, 30% for your extra wants.

Envelope Budget

Then an envelope budget will make you accountable.  Each week separate your money into envelopes based on the percentages you’ve set up. Use only what’s in the envelope for each category.

If the envelope budget seems outdated, don’t worry. Apps like Mint and NerdWallet use similar principles to help you track spending.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is your key to success. It’s the difference between someone who stays late every night and someone who volunteers to be cut. It’s the difference between someone who finds a better job and someone who stays where they are. It’s the difference between someone who says no and someone who regularly overspends.

Learning self-discipline takes time, but it gets easier. Make a plan that replaces less important habits with ones that bring you success.

If your current routine is a few drinks after work, make a ritual of tea before bed. Whatever it is, make habits that help you achieve your goals.

Setting goals is a huge first step toward success.
